The September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center changed the course of history. It began a global war on terrorism, which shook new life into Special Forces and redefined their character. They have become the main tool in the fight against extremists, stepping out from the shadow of the Cold War to take their place centre-stage in the glare of the spotlights. And just like in 2001, today — almost 20 years later — the spectre of further changes can again be seen on the horizon of the Special Forces.
