Eugen Richter „Pictures of the Socialistic Future” (Book review)

The first anti-utopia was written in 1920 in the Soviet Russia by Evgeni Zamyatin. In Russia, the novel was published only in 1988, and the reaction in Soviet Russia in the 20s was outrage, forcing Zamyatin to leave the country.

Konstantin Eduardovich was not only a genius astrophysicist and rocket scientist, but also created a cosmic philosophy which he presented in his many different articles, essays and novels. S&F recently dedicated a book review to one of his novels “Out of Earth” which was an attempt to synchronize his technological theories in the form of a novel.

In the far southwestern corner of England, overlooking the blue Atlantic and the green rolling hills of Penwith, there is a village of tiny grey stone cottages called St. Just, less than 10 km away from Land’s End and a short walk from Cape Cornwall. Behind the King’s Arms is the Anglican Parish Church, built in the 15th Century. Inside it, you’ll see stained glass windows and a large collection of old flags – the biggest of which is a White Ensign (a Cross of St. George with a Union Jack in the top left-hand corner). It belonged to HMS Revenge (pictured above), was flown during the Battle of Jutland (1916), and was presented to the church by Captain Russell Grenfell.

Rousseau’s philosophy is mainly interpreted in two ways: firstly (and most commonly) through the concept of Romanticism, merging his ideas with his extraordinary personality and seeing his philosophy as a common heritage of the European civilisation. Another approach is known as the “Jacobin” or “Bolshevik” approach, which is deeply aggressive and radical. These two movements considered Rousseau’s philosophy as an ideological forerunner.
